A group of seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left group stand trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
