European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
