The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
