Presence Film
The acclaimed director challenges his directorial skills with this clever paranormal narrative captured wholly through the eyes of a ghost. As a family including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the filming device – as the unseen entity – tracks their movements. The daughter appears conscious of the poltergeist, and it looks like guarding her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, including a revelation that may be unexpected. This Saturday, multiple showings, Sky Cinema
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
Nicolas Cage fully commits to his cult stardom through this autobiographical spoof. He plays a narcissistic Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who accepts a $1m payday to attend a birthday party at a Mediterranean location for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by the intelligence agency to gather intel on the alleged criminal, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” proves useful. October 11th, prime time, Channel 4
This Creepy Thriller
Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest remains effective without requiring a sequel. Located in 1978 Denver, a series of child abductions has rendered the children anxious. After Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and imprisoned in a cellar, he anticipates a fatal end. But the non-functional line mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with ghostly voices providing assistance, and the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen might rescue him. An effective horror. This Saturday, 10.50pm, Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the battle between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for greed in Showalter's wonderfully garish true story of the disgraced religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield portrays the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals begin capitalizing on the people's religious faith. It's a riot of bad interior design, bad makeup and hypocrisy, yet Jessica Chastain manages to present the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, late night, the Film4 channel
This Espionage Thriller
This period's second offering from Steven Soderbergh is a spy mystery as precise as the polo necks sported by the actor's intelligence officer. He receives a mission with uncovering a double agent within their ranks out of five possibilities – among them is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. The two stars are masters of understated style, resulting in an engaging mind game of fact versus fiction takes place. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the clever spy entertainment. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
